Can I Report an Abusive Stepparent to the Authorities

My question involves child abuse or neglect in the State of: I live in Sydney, Australia

I have a very unusual situation and am on the verge of a breakdown. I am 14 and am currently in year 9 at high school. My mother left my biological father when I was at a very young age (2) due to the fact that he stole money from my grandparents. I'm hazy on what exactly happened, as my mum has not explained it fully to me. I have a restraining order against him and have no intention of seeing him.

My mum remarried to my step-father, who I have always known as my father until recently when my mum told me the truth. We are (we being myself, my mother, my little brother, grandmother and grandfather) living in the one house, my grandparents recently moving in after being invited by my step father.

The problem is... He is abusive. He constantly calls me a d***head or a f***wit and swears around us all the time. He also abuses both my 5 year old brother and myself frequently... Just the other day he beat me and put me in a headlock where I couldn't breathe. Had it not been for my grandfather... I di notknow what might have happened. He threatens us with saying I'm going to smack you, when we've done nothing wrong at all, this goes for my brother who is his biological son too.

It happens on a daily basis and I am just so fed up with it all...

Can I report him to the Police? I live in Sydney, Australia. I have talked about it with my mum and she has said that I best not because it is his money and he might kick me out. Legally is he allowed to do this? Seeing as he is my legal guardian and I am 14?

While this is a US forum and the laws will differ in Australia, I’m sure that you can report your situation to the police or the Australian equivalent of Child Protective Services. A local child protective service advocate could better advise you of your options. I am also pretty sure that he cannot legally kick you out. However, I am not sure that he is your legal guardian. If HE were to move out, I do not believe that he would have any further financial responsibility regarding you (his son and, likely, your mom he still would).
