    Civil Demand from Shoplifting
My question involves criminal law for the state of: California. 18 months ago I was caught shoplifting, was arrested, and pled guilty in court. I attended a class that removed the mistomenor from my record. Today 18 months after I pled guilty I recieved mail from a law office representing the JCpennys that requested I pay $325. I have not moved in the last 18 months changed my phone number or done anything that would restrict them from contacting me. Since I pled guilty am I responsible to pay this fee or has the statute ran up on them being able to request money from me?

The request they sent you is most likely a civil demand, and yes they can send it to you as civil matters are separate from criminal charges. If you don't pay the demand, they can sue you for an even larger sum, and you'd have a hard time defending against such a suit with a guilty plea on record.

You should check the statute of limitations for civil claims (and retail civil demands specifically) which may preclude them from suing you and allow you to ignore the demand safely; otherwise, it would probably be best to just pay it.
