False Accusation of Shoplifting at Macy's
My question involves criminal law for the state of: ILLINOIS
I was accused of shoplifting a pair of gloves at Macy's. Total cost: $26. Never have any kind of justice problem before, neither a ticket.
This is what is happen: security force stopped me, accusing me of the crime. I was stopped at the door and arrested on the ground floor. I tried to explained them that were wrong, but as far as English is not my language (I am not American; I handle a L1 Work Visa) I couldn't. During the arrest, Security Force asked me to pay a fine of $ 500. Although I'm not guilty, I decided to pay it to avoid any inconveniences. I cooperated and gave them all the information they asked for, explaining that what they are doing was a mistake. The police was called and I was brought down to the station, fingerprinted, photographed and arrested for 4 hours.
Now, I have a citation on the court for next month. What steps I need to follow to prove my innocence? I do have the receipt of the gloves I bought 3 weeks before of the incident to verify my innocence, and they probably gave the security cam recordings. With this data, can the Court declare myself not guilty, avoiding any kind of records? If the Court declare me guilty, as far as stupidly I paid the fine, which other consequences can I face?

Just because you have a receipt for a similar pair of gloves purchased prior to that date does not mean they do not have you on camera stealing another pair. Macy's has very, very, good cameras.

You need to get a Criminal Defense Lawyer, who will help you navigate through the process. THe lawyer will ask for copies of all evidence including video.
