Can cops do this? Possible ticket
I was driving east on a local road and a plain white unmarked vehicle pulls up next to me honking his horn, as I look over he shows me a badge for a few seconds and says "you'll be getting your ticket in the mail". He is talking to me as we are driving. I asked him for what and he told me that I was speeding in a school zone. I wasn't aware that I was in a school zone and the other cars around me were not driving that slow either. When I hit the next intersection I get into the left lane of two left hand turning lanes, he pulls into the right but stops behind my car and never pulls up next to me to explain anything, no flashing lights, never got out of his vehicle and asked me for a license or to sign anything. He wasn't wearing a uniform that I could see when he was next to me. As we made the left turn at the intersection about a quarter mile down the road he turned into an apartment complex and was gone. Will he be able to mail me a ticket? Did he violate any procedures by the way he went about the "ticket" process?

Didn't you notice the big letters: Please Include The Name Of Your State when you started this thread? "Driving east on a local road" doesn't tell us much.

Is it possible? Sure. Is it likely? Probably not.

Worry about it if you get the citation in the mail.

I'll bet there's a good chance the guy wasn't a cop. There are a lot of strange people out there. Did you happen to notice whether it was a publicly owned vehicle (by the license plate)? It wouldn't mean he wasn't if it were a private vehicle but it would be interesting to know.

didn't notice anything about the license plate because I was never behind him...I had a local guy down here email me saying he was "in the business" and that the only way the cop could mail me a ticket is if he personally knew me or recognized me by a previous stop, otherwise he has no way to confirm my identity since he never pulled me over to check my license. So, I guess I'll have to wait and see.

    Thanks

Well, if I were that desperate to cite you, I would pull up the DMV photo of the registered owner and anyone else in the household to see if I could get a match on the driver. But that would generally be a lot of work for what might still be a court crapshoot.
