Using a False ID to Purchase Alcohol
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Pennsylvania

    Dear ExpertLaw,

Hope you are well. This is my first post here. 5 years ago, I made a grievous mistake to use a false ID to purchase alcohol for my friends. I was 18 years old with a false ID, a mistake that I will never repeat. A police officer detained me (but did not arrest or cuff me). He gave me a citation and a few months later in the mail, I received a letter to pay $600 and suspension of my driver's license for 90 days. At the time, I was just glad to be rid of the matter and just paid the fine and accepted the suspension. I believe this was a summary offense but will need to pull out the official letter.

I am currently wondering if I took the right approach. I never went to court or had any follow-up after I paid the fine, but recently when I pulled up the history of my driver's license...this was on my record:

    Violation: Crimes Code: 63103
Description: Carrying a false ID card

According to a google search, this crimes code is associated with a misdemeanor third degree, however, I never went to court or was I convicted of anything I believe. I was told this was a driving violation, not a criminal matter.

I immediately went to the Pennsylvania State Police

and submitted a criminal background check -- to my relief, no record of any criminal records. I don't work in a transportation / driving profession, but am wondering if this record (which is publicly accessible with my driver's license number) will impact future employment. I don't want a silly but serious mistake like this affect me for the rest of my life.

The event took place over 5 years ago, is an expungement on my driver's license possible? And what are the impact to my future employment prospects? Thank you so much.

The first conviction is a summary offense. Subsequent violations a 3rd degree misdemeanor.

Mr Knowitall summarized it well in this thread.

By paying the fee and complying with 90 day DL suspension that was admission of guilt I believe.

The criminal record issues were discussed in this thread, but you seem focused on your driver's license. You will not find a way to compel the DMV to remove an accurate report of a driver's license suspension from your driving record.

Thank you very much learninglaw and Mr.KnowItAll. I appreciate your time. Would it make sense for me to get a new license? I live in a different state now. I would also never give out my license for employment screening. I can use other forms of ID such as a passport.

Would this help prevent a potential employer from finding this? Also is the PA State Police database enough or can you recommend a personal background check service to make sure my records are OK?
