Should and Can I Become Emancipated
I'm currently 15 but turn 16 here in 3 months. My mother recently passed away and I'm currently living with my dad, but me and him have never gotten along. I'm positive I can take care of myself, when I turn 16 I already have a job I can get, plus checks I get from social security. I already have a place I could stay at with my grandma or boyfriends dad which my boyfriend don't live with but is close too. I'm still in high school and plan on finishing it, that isn't a problem for me. I pay for everything I buy, my phone bill, clothes, etc. I think I should and I've asked some other people if they think I could make it on my own and if its a good idea, all but a few have agreed with me.

You will not qualify for emancipation.

(Do you realize that emancipation would mean your social security checks would stop?). Please read about emancipation here on this forum.

What would you be earning, at 16, to enable you to pay full market rent, utilities, transportation, food, clothing, medical insurance, sundries, etc.,?

If you have to have your grandmother or your boyfriend's father to provide you with a place to live, then you do not qualify to be emancipated. Emancipation does not mean paying just your phone bill and your clothes, it means paying your rent (market rate, not a token amount); utilities; insurance; transportation; medical care; food; staples; school fees and supplies; and all the other incidentals of life, all by yourself. Emancipation does not mean that you "divorce" your parent(s) and go live with someone else who provides part or all of your support; it means that YOU are supporting yourself. Entirely. While still going to school and getting better than average grades. And "I don't get along with my dad" is NOT a valid reason for a judge to emancipate a minor in any state.

If your father gives you permission, you can live with your grandmother (don't even IMAGAINE you'll be allowed to live with your boyfriend's father - with or without the boyfriend in residence). If your father does not give you permission, then you stay right where you are.

I understand that, I not going to live with them, I was just saying that if that anything was to happen I had somewhere to go till I got on my own two feet again. I could pay for all that stuff, and I know what emancipation means I'm not some stupid little kid. My father is stupid and isn't going to let me do that as long as I get money for him to spend on him he isn't letting me go anywhere. I could live without a house phone, i barely watch tv much less talk on the phone, my bills wont be that much. Oh and no my checks wouldn't stop the social security people done told me, that i would get the checks as long as i am in school. I have a savings account with about 3,000 in it.

If I was to get emancipated I wouldnt buy some big ol' house and have top of the line stuff. I was raised poor. I know the meaning of stuff, and how to make it last.

My dad has never been part of my life since I was 8. He isn't making my life any better. If I lived on my own and did stuff for myself(Like I ain't already) I would be doing better and bettering myself

You get dependent benefits because you are a dependent minor.

If you are emancipated, you are no longer considered a dependent minor.

Regardless, you do not qualify for emancipation.

If you were as smart as you think you are, you would already know that you do not qualify for emancipation by any stretch of the imagination. Concentrate on good grades and not getting pregnant for now.
