Shoplifting Charge First Offense, Police Were Involved. What Can I Expect
My question involves criminal law for the state of: New Jersey
Hello there. I am 18 years old, and a freshman in college. Today I was stopped at a store for stealing an item of less than 10$ in value. I have never been caught shoplifting before, and it is something that I plan never to do again. The store staff was somewhat sympathetic for my situation but called authorities because it was policy to do so. I was arrested and brought to the station where they took all my information down and such. I was given a form of complaint that stated that the court date was on January 15. Even the police thought it was quite ridiculous the amount of trouble I had to go through for such a petty crime. (but a crime nonetheless) What kind of punishment or sentence can I expect to receive? And will this stay on my permanent record? I am worrying myself to death, and any and all help is deeply appreciated. Thank you in advance.

Hire a Criminal Defense Lawyer. If you can't afford one, plead Not Guilty and ask for a Public Defender.
Whichever you get....ask about 1st Time Offender or Diversion programs.
Also, be sure to pay the Civil Demand notice as soon as possible. Judges like to see that is paid, or payment arrangements have been made.
Punishment: Aside from the Civil Demand (which is separate from the criminal case); court costs and fines; possibly community service or anti-shoplifting class (you pay for this, too). Oh, and the Public Defender will come with a fee ($200+).
