50 Dollar Civil Demand from Shoplifting Incident, Can I Expect Court Next
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Kansas
I made a really bad decision and shoplifted and now I know I Have to pay. I received a letter from the law offices of Michael Ira Asen P.C. and I was wondering if he is actually affiliated with Walmart, you know to make sure this isn't a scam.
The theft occurred on 11/22/11 and I have not receieved a letter from Walmart or the county or any courts.
    Is this normal?

I called the police department about my case and they said I was in the system but I was not appointed to a court or an attorney. I assumed by now if any court appearance is required I would have been notified or sent a letter by now. So if I pay this fine am I in the clear? Is this how some cases normally go or am I risking a scam? The incident occurred in Leavenworth Kansas but I had to mze back to Texas for good to take care of my dad. So I want to take care of this appropriatley and asap! Any help on that would be appreciated to!

    Thanks

Asen is the same as Olonoff, Zellman, RecoverPay.com, etc... They are the same company that is contracted by WalMart to collect the civil demands.

The civil demand has nothing to do with the criminal charges. The DA/Police are not going to help you with that.

The civil demand is legal and common. $50 is getting off light. Basically, it is a civil suit the store is bringing against you to compensate for the damages to them (those LP guys are not free, nor are the cameras, etc).
