Looking for a Job After Caught Shoplifting
My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York
I was caught shoplifting on February 1, 2011. I stole about 60$ of items and when security caught me, they brought me to a room where they took back all of the items, got down my name, address, etc. They called the police and later they took me to the precinct. I was there for about 6 hours, and yes I'm a minor. The police said that I had to show up to court and not commit any crimes in the next six months and my case would be "closed." I had to show up to court some day in March and I had to pay fines. I completed my community service. I didn't commit any crimes in that time period and I plan on not committing anymore. I was 16 at the time and now I'm 17.
I was wondering if this stays on my record forever and does this prevent me from finding a job in retails stores or any job at all.
Re: Looking for a Job After Caught Shoplifting
Likely you will be put into the retail theft database, if being a juvenile does not prohibit it. Your juvenile record will not follow you into adulthood, though likely a retail job will be impossible.
Re: Looking for a Job After Caught Shoplifting
Retailers can enter your name in to theft database, entering minors might not be allowed. Once the time period pass, the case is sealed and shouldn't pop up. Google ny acd it sound like that is what they gave you. It basically postpones the case for 6 months and then it gets dismissed and seals the case. Most of the time chances are nothing will pop up.
Re: Looking for a Job After Caught Shoplifting
Minors (people under 18) are not listed in the National Retail Database.

Betty would know for sure. Looks like you dodged a bullet OP. I would not apply to any jobs until you are 18.
Re: Looking for a Job After Caught Shoplifting
You will want to check on how and when you can petition to have your arrest record expunged. Once an expungement order is entered, you can “truthfully” inform prospective employers and landlords you do not have an arrest record (based on this retail theft incident). An expungement order will also minimize the prospective dissemination of information concerning your arrest record to commercial databases.
Re: Looking for a Job After Caught Shoplifting
As a minor, OP's record should be sealed at 18.
