You need to look into the availability of deferral or diversion programs in your county for first time drug offenders. You may be able to find information from the county court or prosecutor's website, although I can't promise that information will be there.
OK, if all you were charged with is possession of paraphernalia you are in SLIGHTLY better shape. That's a class 1 mis. It's still going to cause you grief in the long run and may mess with your college financial aid. However, I do believe you may now be eligible for diversion.
Still, given the seriousness of this I'd recommend the lawyer.
