Open Carry Knife Laws in California
so i have look online to satisfy my curiosity and found nothing on the legality of fixed blades that truley explains it. im only curious but is it legal to carry a knife that has a 6 to 8 inch blade like a k-bar for example open on the waist? i have read the laws for pocket knives and smaller fixed blades but found nothing on the longer ones

If you're asking about Penal Code Sec. 12020 pertaining to street carry of knives with fixed blades, pursuant to subsection 25(d) "Knives carried in sheaths which are worn openly suspended from the waist of the wearer are not concealed within the meaning of this section". That said, there are other statutes (e.g., school carry rules) and local ordinances that may apply.

Ditto what Mr. Knowitall said. PC 12020 governs for most instances.
If openly displayed and not concealed, absent local ordinances prohibiting the wearing of the knife, and assuming it is otherwise legal to possess in CA (i.e. not surrounded by brass knuckles, etc.), you should not have a problem wearing it. Some people might be concerned about you carrying a big "fighting" style knife and you might get some worried glances or calls to the police, but as long as you are civil and not confrontational there shouldn't be a problem.
Is there a reason you feel the need to carry such a knife?
