    Banned and Fined After Stealing
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Washington D.C.

This was my first time shoplifting and I swear I would never do it again. I tried to steal a pair of shoes, I walked out the store and I froze up and I was really plan on just taking them back but then the security came out, took me back in and into the office. I was scared for my life. I gave them my information. No police or finger print was involved. He said "I'm just going to ban you from th store" since the Manager wouldn't pick up the phone. So after about a week or 2, I get a letter of me having to Pay a total amount of $132.00.

Do they add on more than what is cost?

    Is this a felony?

Will this be placed on my record?

I dont know what to do, I wanna finish my studies and go into the navy but this may all stop me.

Yes, your damage to them is in excess of what you stole. They include costs of dealing with people like you.

It's not criminal at all unless the police/district get involved which sounds like this didn't happen.

Not your criminal record unless you are subsequently arrested. There will most likely be a store record (stay out of that store) and potentially an entry into the national retail theft database.

Looks like you might have got lucky, but if you want to enter the Navy (and the military is not overly inclined to issue exceptions at their current strength needs), you need to clean up your act. Stop breaking the law, and if you're doing drugs, you better clean up that act as well.

Thank you, besides I am against drugs and this was only a one time thing trust me.
