Caught Shoplifting
My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York
This Sunday I was caught shoplifting worth of merchendise at a local grocery store. So stupid and I feel horrible. I've always felt that way. The security officer brought me to his office and made me sign two papers. One with my information and one saying that I could not enter the property for a year. No police were called and I was not issued anything saying I'd have to go to court or a citation. I was not arrested since no police were called. He told me that I might get something saying I'd have to pay 4x the amount of the what the stuff was worth, from research I know that this is a civil demand. What can I expect to happen? I'm very worried and stressing out over this. I realize that anything could happen, but is there something more likely to happen to me since this is the first time? And I am actually thankful for getting caught, because it's given me the chance to stop and I've been able to find groups to go to for help.

Re: Caught Shoplifting
If they told you that they were not prosecuting you, that you're subject to a ban from their premises, and that you'll likely receive a civil demand, then you should not see law enforcement involvement unless you return to their premises in violation of the ban, and will probably receive a civil demand.
