What Should I Do in Court My Shoplifting Case in New Jersey
My question involves criminal law for the state of: NJ
Hi,
I was caught shoplifting in NJ. I walked out with a pair of shoes and was caught by LP at the exit. They took me to a backroom and made me sign a paper saying that I will not return to the store. The cops came and handcuffed me and took me to the police department. They fingerprinted and photographed me.
I have court in 3 weeks. I am completely broke and cannot afford a lawyer. How do I get a public defense lawyer? How can I get the offense down to a lower offense? How can I get my fingerprint and photo records erased? Do I plead guilty or not guilty. Thank you so much for all your help!

If you are indigent you ask the court to provide you a public defender. They will determine you are eligible, you pay the $50 and the public defenders office will assign you one.
Always plead not guilty unless you have clear guidance from a lawyer (not the prosecutor) of the implications of pleading guilty.
