New York Unemployment Legal Claim
My question involves unemployment benefits for the state of: New York. I was employed in a medical office I was laid off the job. I filed for unemployment rite away around may 2010 while trying to get into school. Starting a business was something that I stated in my claim however they still approved it. I've been doing alot of re-search on the business aspects & what needs to be done so i took the first step & got the certificate of authority. I informed the NYS unemployment that I was looking to start my own business but they kep't ignoring it.
About 3 weeks ago a specialist called me literally harassing me asking me if I was working "am I sure?..."He also kep't asking about my business certificate. And I provided it to him & "again he keep t asking why didn't I state that i was working. On my weekly claim. I told him I lost my grand father so I haven't conducted any business I was in puerto rico for 3 weeks then when I got back I started doing more home work on the business aspect & trying to get into school. He was very rude the entire time & threaten me & said that you'll get a notice over the mail.
I did re-search on this & it turned out they do have a program for people who are looking to start there own business. But they never informed me.
I also asked my unemployment counselor & she said the same thing in an email "dont worry about it" keep filing your claim?
I got a notice September 19th & it stated that my claim is now suspended & I owe $15.### for recovery re-payment. If i don't pay they will take action.
I contacted an attorney in Manhattan they specialize in unemployment cases I have a meeting with them next week in regards to this case.
Any advise ? Also should I get a letter from the owner of the medical office.

any ideas of a possible outcome?
Re: New York Unemployment Legal Claim
If you were working in a business, you needed to report your wages or status on the weekly/biweekly claim form. If you were in PR, you don't qualify for benefits those weeks. I suspect you will be in trouble for those reasons.
