University Public Computers Chats Logged
My question involves defamation in the state of:
Hello,
I am an university student and at my school they have public computer use sites with students who are in charge of these computers. If at these sites I had a private facebook chat conversation logged and spread around the school, exactly what could I do about it and what evidence would I need?
It seems to be to be rather difficult that I would be able to get the evidence that I need so I would like to know about that in particular.
Re: University Public Computers Chats Logged
What state are you in? Your first issue would be to talk to the university staff/administration about any inappropriate behavior. There appears to be no overriding legal issue.
Re: University Public Computers Chats Logged
If you are stating that some student, without the knowledge of school administration, put a logger on a computer in a public location, logged your chat and then emailed it to his friends, I expect that the university has a code of conduct that would prohibit those actions and you can make an appropriate report.
If you are stating that the university logs all activity on its computers and one of its employees pulled your chat out of a log and emailed it to his friends, I expect that you'll find that IT employees are forbidden from doing that and, should the matter be reported to his supervisor, the employee could be disciplined or fired.
If you are trying to state something else, tell us what you're trying to ask.
In terms of reporting it, you would want to provide whatever evidence you have - I cannot promise that it will be enough to figure out what happened or take action. What evidence do you have?
