    Possible Child Support Fraud
My question involves child support in the State of: California

My girlfriend has been going through a hellish custody battle over the past two years.

Pertaining to child support, he is a self employed person. So whatever he says is what they calculate. Currently he is claiming that he is making only around $1300 a month. Simply observation of his lifestyle clearly shows this is a lie. What can be done to audit or keep this person accountable?

    Thanks

What proof does your girlfriend have?

His lifestyle is really not relevant - he could have a rich girlfriend/boyfriend/parent/relative who is providing him with whatever it is that makes him look "rich".

It is possible that his parents are giving him vast sums of money.

Whenever they lived together, his earning was almost 8 times what it is now. Then all of the sudden his income drops that significantly?

If he's self employed, yes, that's entirely possible. His parents gifting him things will not be counted for the purposes of child support.

The answer is "nothing can be done". You can hire someone to look into it, but not only will it cost you, it is not 100% sure that the finding would be allowed in court.

Most people who are self employed, and running from something are pretty smart in putting things of value in other people names or keeping everything in the company name. Hiring someone to find that out would be a total waist of money.

there's also a legitimate issue with the current economy.

Many self-employed folk are finding themselves in dire financial straits - he could be completely legit.

(Though the CP and new spouse/partner rarely want to acknowledge that, unfortunately)
