Caught Shoplifting in Macys New York
My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York.

    Hi,

First, I regret shoplifting, please no negative comments.

Second, I was caught shoplifting in Macys in New York today. They charged me $500 for civil penalties. (charged by macys) I paid $10 and they told me I had to pay within the next 48 hours. They had me sign a bunch of papers with list of the things I stole and then told me I cannot enter Macys for the next 7 years.

The police was called, he showed up. Didn't say much except for "why did you do it? was it a mistake?" that was it. I was not taken into the precint. He wrote me a ticket with a court appearence and let me go. (This was my first offense) (I am 21 years old)

    1. Do I have to pay Macys the $500? The merchandise was given back to the store.
    2. I think I've given them the wrong social secuirty number, and they have an old address from my license.
    3. Will this be on my record? Should I plead guilty or not guilty?
    4. I was not explained anything by them and I just got the ticket and it says Peti Larceny and asked me to appear in court.
    5. What is the best thing for me to do in order for me to get the least punishment? I will never do it again.

    Thank you

    1. Yes. If you don't pay, they can take you to Civil Court. If you still don't pay, it will affect your credit rating.
    2. Better get that information corrected. Call the store and ask for LP.
    3. Yes, you will have a criminal record. Plead Not Guilty and ask for a Public Defender (unless you can afford a private lawyer). Ask the lawyer about a first time offender or Diversion program.
