How to Stop a Minor's Name Change, Parents Have Joint Physical Custody
My question involves name change laws in the State of: IOWA

I have Joint Legal & Joint Physical care of my 13 & 16 yr old daughters . My 16 yr old wants to take my ex wifes maiden name. My 16 yr old has been alienated from me and there is no cooperation from the mother to joint parent. She has violated every stipulation in the decree since 2006 I should have filed contempt 27 counts. How can I stop her from the 16 yr olds name change process??

When the name change petition is filed, answer and oppose it, appear in court, and convince the court that the petition should be denied as contrary to the child's best interest. I can't say that it will help your relationship with the child and, two years from now, the child will be free to pick whatever name she chooses.

If you already have a strained relationship with your daughter I'd think very, very carefully about fighting this. Your daughter may well see your objection as you punishing her.
