Shoplifting at Duane Reade - No Police or Fine
My question involves criminal law for the state of: New York
I am not a NYC resident. I am 22 and have no criminal record and good academic standing. Obviously, I ****ed up big time....
I was detained for shoplifting today at a Duane Reade pharmacy in NY for attempting to steal a somewhat expensive facial moisturizer (they said it cost $100). I was stopped at the exit and detained by store security, and they had me sign two forms, one I believe was an admission that I had attempted to steal, and the other was a notice of trespass not to return. The police were not involved, and I was told only DR would know I stole.
The guard said I was lucky the current manager was on duty, and said they'd take a screenshot of me from the Video since their Camera was broken. He also said my paperwork would be filed with over 5000 other forms. There was no mention of a fine, but I searched the internet and it seems like people have had to pay.
I am a little nervous, and called the manager back to see if I had to pay a fine. He said - no - that they basically just let me go. Should I believe him? Should I write him an apology?
Also is there a way to "redeem" myself with DR after X amount of time passes?

Don't send an apology letter. The store does have 1-2 years (it varies by state) to file charges. An apology letter just gives them more evidence against you.
You will receive a Civil Demand notice in the mail from the store or its lawyers. From what I read, in NY they can charge you five times the amount of the goods. And you will want to pay this, or make arrangements for a payment plan.
Wait a year and write DR Corporate offices, attn Loss Prevention Department, to ask permission to shop there again. Do not step foot into any DR anywhere until you have permission.
