Can I Get Emancipated at the Age of 16
My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Indiana. I keep reading that I can get emancipated at the age of 16, but i would need to be able to take care of myself and have a plan for my future. But, how much money would I need to show that I am capable of taking care of myself? I have a job and i get A's & B's in school. Oh, and would I need a lawyer? Or a parents permission?
Sorry for all the questions! :distress:
Re: Can I Get Emancipated at the Age of 16
Are you currently living away from your parents, and able to pay full market rent, utilities, food, clothing, health insurance, transportation, sundries - everything?
If the answer to that question is "no", then you will not be emancipated.
a very informative thread

Addressing only the dollar issue, there's no magic dollar figure. You need to show that you can support yourself through the age of majority. If you have $1 million in the bank, that's easy. If you do not, you need to convince a court that between your savings and stable, ongoing employment that you'll be able to support yourself through the age of majority. Having a part-time job may generate enough income for self-support (although for most jobs available to teens that money is likely to fall short), but the court can be expected to take a hard look at whether that employment will continue and whether, particularly in this economy, you would be able to support yourself during a period of unexpected unemployment.

well, what if I have somewhere to live? I can pay for clothes, food, & gas for my car. And if i need any help the people I am living with will help me.

What will happen if the people die in a plane crash? What about health insurance? Sundries? Have you done any research on the average monthly expenses in your area?
I'm asking seriously. You need to show the court that you can survive on your own.
If your parents agree to you living elsewhere, that's different and there are ways to accomplish that.

If you need other people to help you with your support, then you do not qualify for emancipation.
