I Am 17 and I Want Emancipation
My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Florida.
It would mean the world to me if I was free from both of my divorced parents. All they do is fight over me, and honestly, I don't want either of them "owning" me. There is dirty frightening and threats.. I want to live on my own and go to college. My mother owes money on me so I cant get my Transcripts from my school to even go to college and she owes money to my library so even if she paid it off I still wouldn't be able to get books. I'm tired of having to pay for their misdoings, and suffer because of them. I want to be on my own so badly. They held me back from getting a job and so much more on purpose. So my question is how do I get the ball rolling on this? I heard your parent has to start it and that you have to have a job and money?? Can people help with this?
Re: I Am 17 and I Want Emancipation
Both of your parents (or the one with sole legal custody) would have to file your petition.
You would also need to prove to the court that you are capable of paying full market rent, utilities, food, clothing, health insurance, transportation - can you do that already?
And depending on how far you are from being 18, there's at least a fair chance that the petition wouldn't be heard before you turned 18 anyway.
