Petty Theft, 484 PC
My question involves criminal law for the state of: California.
I have been charged with petty theft 484 pc. I am 19 years old and I have never been arrested or charged for anything else before. I attempted to steal was a handle of alcohol from Safeway, and the total was $41. I was not arrested, but instead I was given a ticket with a court date. I am prepared to go to court, pay my fines, and serve whatever service required. I am wondering if I should get advice from a lawyer or if I should just appear in court. I am concerned that charges will be more severe since I am under age and attempted to take alcohol. I attend school in LA, but am living in the bay area for the summer. I need to know that if I am given community service would I have to complete the hours in the bay area or could I do it in LA.
If you have any information please let me know. Anything will help. Thank you.

Re: Petty Theft, 484 PC
Read the stickied threads. If you want to stick yourself with a criminal record, go to court, plead guilty and take your lumps. Otherwise, consult a lawyer about your eligibility for diversion, deferral, or any other disposition that might allow you to avoid a criminal conviction.
You can address questions about community service to your lawyer or the probation department.
