Stopped for Speeding, Out-of-State License
My question involves a speeding ticket from the State of New Jersey but I have a New York Driver's License. I moved to New Jersey and got a speeding ticket going 44 in a 25 zone. Now I have a couple of questions:
1) Will those points be carried onto my NYS driver's License?
2)This is my first violation,Do you think I should go to the court? Or just pay the fees and later on transfer my license to NJ?
3)If not, will the points be shown on my driving record when I change my driver's license to NJ?
4) How will my insurance rates be affected?
5) If I goto the court will my points be reduced since this is a 4 point offense.
Please advise.
Thanks in advance.
Re: Stopped for Speeding, Out-of-State License
As is explained here, "The NYSDMV does not record out-of-state violations committed by NYS drivers in other jurisdictions. The exceptions are alcohol-related violations, drug-related violations, and moving violations committed in Quebec or Ontario."
It's for you to decide whether to plead guilty or fight. You can expect that New Jersey will apply New Jersey points to a New Jersey license if you change your license to that state before the points expire.
You will need to discuss the impact of the ticket on your insurance rates with your insurance agent.
