First Time Shoplifting in Missouri
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Missouri. My daughter was caught shoplifting in Spencer Gifts. She was charged with shop lifting and has also recieved the Civil penalty which she paid. My question is 'Should she get a lawyer to represent her or throw herself on the mercy of the court'. She starts to college this fall and was 17 when the event occured. The amount shoplifted was less than $50. I do not want her to have a lifelong record if this can be helped.

What do you picture that it means to "throw herself on the mercy of the court"? Plead guilty and hope that the court gives her a break? That's a good way to end up with the conviction she's trying to avoid.
She should consult a local lawyer about whether she might qualify for a diversion program or deferred sentence.
