Getting Divorced After Marrying in Uganda
My question involves marriage law for the State of: Wisconsin
I am a US citizen, born and raised here. I married a man from Uganda, in Uganda. I never registered the marriage here and so I am wondering if it is even legal here?
Also, the man was abusive to me and I married more out of fear. We were married for only one day before I flew back home. We never lived together as husband and wife. I was hoping to get the marriage annulled, but do not know how I would even prove the abuse or intimidation. In order to file for an annulment or a divorce, do I have to file it in Uganda? or can I file in Wisconsin even though the marriage was never registered here?
After I came back home, alone, the man was extremely persistent on me changing my name to his. I did and wish I never had. I feel he brainwashed me in so many ways and so I did what he told me to do until I woke up and realized that I could not bring him to the States because he was dangerous. The lady at the Social Security office changed my name using the Ugandan marriage certificate. She seemed hesitant at first, but still did it. Was it okay for her to use that certificate and not a United States marriage certificate to change my name?
:( If anyone can help on any of this, please do.. I want the whole thing to be over and to change my name back. Thank you.
Re: Getting Divorced After Marrying in Uganda
Yes, the marriage is legal here.
Why would you imagine that it wasn't legal for you to change your name with your actual marriage certificate.
Divorce your husband and change your name back.
Re: Getting Divorced After Marrying in Uganda
I had heard once that the marriage isn't legal unless it is registered in the States and that you couldn't change your name unless you had a marriage certificate from the States. That is why I was asking about it.
I want to divorce him, but do not know how to do it. I don't know if I can just file it here in Wisconsin or if I have to file it in Uganda.
Re: Getting Divorced After Marrying in Uganda
if you are a resident of Wisconsin, you can file for the divorce in Wisconsin. Not knowing Ugandan law, I have no idea what actions you would have available to you there.
Of course, serving him in Uganda might be a problem.
Since your marriage in Uganda would be recognized in the states, as long as changing your name when getting married in Uganda is legal, then I see no reason the SS person should have questioned your request. Maybe it's because she does not know Ugandan law and looked puzzled but took your word for it as being allowed.
