Am I Likely to Be Charged After Being Let Go
I know that stores have 1-2 years from the date of the alleged incident to file charges against a shoplifter, but my question is, how often do they do this (i.e., 1-2 years after the fact)?

My story: I was stopped outside a grocery store after taking <$20 in merchandise. Gave ID, SSN, DL#, etc, was photographed and let go. No police, no store ban, etc. Was told I'd probably hear from store in near future (prob for civil demand, which I'll pay).

But I have priors. Was stopped at a different store (diff. chain) about 8 mos ago... same thing, no cops, paid civil demand, etc. Also, I was arrested & charged 5 and 7 yrs ago for 2 diff petty thefts.

You prob hear this all the time, but I have really learned my lesson now. This sh*t must and will stop. I just need to know what to expect in the next 1-2 yrs so I don't drive myself even more crazy than I already am.

You get to sweat it out for a while. So far, looking like just a civil demand. But....

If I were you, I'd see if there is Shoplifters Anonymous in your area, or get into some counseling. Your luck may soon run out.

Listen to what PandorasBox said. You obviously have a problem. Sounds like you've been lucky thus far but your luck WILL run out eventually.

Just a side question... how often do you steal where you don't get caught? And please don't say every time you've stolen you've been caught... no one will buy that one.

I am interested as well. You sound like a decent thief..what mistake did you make to get busted? What drives you to steal? What would have stopped you from stealing?
