17 Year Old Dating a 23 Year Old
My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

i am 17 years old(18 in a couple months). i was seeing someone who was 23. we never did anything sexual and didnt even kiss. my father told us we could never speak again until i am 18, cuz he said its illegal to date someone older, however i think he is wrong. legally are we allowed to continue to date if we dont do anything sexually. (we both want to wait till marriage). is it illegal to date someone of that age or is it just illegal if we become sexually involved or how does that all work.

Your father is wrong that it is illegal to date as long as it is non-sexual.

However, if your father says no, then it is no until you are 18, regardless of whether it is illegal or not. Your father cannot make the illegal, legal but he can make the legal, illegal (for you).

Dittoing cbg, dating is not illegal. Any form of sexual contact (groping, fondling, petting, intercourse, oral sex, etc.) is illegal and your older friend could be committing a felony to do those things.

As said, until you are 18 mom and dad have complete say over who yu can see and what you can do. When you are 18 you can do as you please, but understand that there can be consequences even then. Even if 18 if you do not follow the rules at home, you might find yourself without support or a roof over your head, so be careful how far you want to push this even at 18. If your older companions is respectful enough, maybe they can make a positive impression on your parents when you are 18 and they will not be opposed to you dating.

So it's illegal without parent consent?

Or ur saying I should follow my parents rules?

If we were to date without their permission. What could happen to him. Like what r the consequences?

We prob won't cuz I don't want to risk getting him in trouble. But I'm curious.

When we obtain a crystal ball such that we can foresee the future, we will be happy to tell you what the future holds. Until then, given that you've decided not to sneak around, the many theoretical possible futures that could result from your lying to your parents, sneaking around, and his seeing you in violation of their wishes are not relevant.

Dating, no. Actions related the dating might be.

Yes, you should. And if you hope for your parents to approve of your dating decision when you are 18, then you might want to honor their wishes. Defying them now might result in your finding yourself without parental support or a home on your 18th birthday.

Your older friend (I assume is a male) could find himself charged with a misdemeanor for contributing to the delinquency of a minor, which is punishable by up to 60 months in jail and a fine of up to $1,000. Not to mention the stigma of a criminal record.
