Girlfriend's Employer Called Her Parent and Disclosed She Was Pregnant
My question involves labor and employment law for the state of: Wisconsin
Girlfriends employer called her parent and disclosed she was pregnant before we had told her parent she was pregnant. Isn't there laws against disclosing health information that they receive? Doctors gave her restrictions and that was why her employer knew. Employer called her emergency contact because they couldn't reach my girlfriends phone.... there was no reason to mention her pregnancy.... should just have left message to contact her work.

Unless the employer is a doctor's office, hospital, medical billing office, health insurance company, or something of the sort, it's unlikely that the HIPAA privacy laws apply. They are nowhere near as broad as most people assume.

No laws have been broken here.

i understand that the HIPAA laws dont apply but under my understanding and some research the ADA laws have something that prevents employers from disclosing health information.

The number was an emergency number, correct?
Then the employer has done nothing wrong.
Seriously though - and this is the question - how has she been damaged?
What do either of you expect to accomplish?
Re: Girl Friends Employer Called Her Parent and Disclosed She Was Pregnant
Girlfriend's employer probably thought girlfriend's parent already knew girlfriend was pregnant. Women normally tell their parents and other family members that they'ren pregnant before they tell their employers.
Even so, it's not as if girlfriend's parent wasn't going to find out soon anyway.
In addition, girlfriend shouldn't have listed her parent as an emergency contact if she didn't want said parent to find out about things known only to her employer.
