    Collections on Bills Never Received
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Kansas

I received a notice from a collection agency today regarding a medical bill I have never seen. The collections agency stated the bill was for a doctor's visit in 2/2007, for a doctor I have never used.

Two questions. First, I assume I now have to deal with the collection agency since this is for a bill incurred in 2007?

Second, is this bill past the statute of limitations for collections anyway?

I am trying to figure out how best to proceed.

    Oral Contract: 3 years

    Written Contract: 6 years

    Promissory Note: 5 years

    Open-Ended Accounts: 3 years

But why are you concerned about SOL if you never saw the doctor and never received the treatment?

(Or is the bill from a healthcare center you have used in the past, but with a different provider's name?)

I would suggest first, finding out if it is legitimately your bill. If it is, I would suggest you then find out why it wasn't paid. If there is no valid reason it wasn't paid, I would suggest you then pay the bill.

Thanks for your reply. I have never been to the physician or the office that is on the collection notice.

I asked about the SOL because I thought, perhaps, I could approach them with "Not only is this not my bill but the SOL has run." Maybe not?

JK-I will verify that this is not my bill but would be shocked if it was considering I've never seen the doctor or been to the office listed. It also not on my credit report. The whole thing is odd.

it could be a mistake. It does happen. Start with sending a letter for validation. I would include the fact you are disputing due to the doctor or business is unknown to you.

Then, I would contact the doctors office and start asking about the bill with them.

be aware, often times if you have procedures performed in hospitals, you may not know the name of all the doctors involved and since many doctors are not employed by the hospital itself, they often time issue bills using their office information. Due to that, it would be possible to get a bill from a doctor you have no idea who it is and from a facility you have never been to.

Did you have any medical treatment back then that might have resulted in such a bill?

Thanks JK. I will send a letter for validation and will contact the doctor's office. I've not been to a hospital since 1998 and have only had routine visits with my personal physician since then so I believe this is an error.

    Thanks for the advice!
