Improper Re-Aging of a Disputed Debt
My question involves collection proceedings in the State of: Texas
I received 2 letters in yesterday's mail from RJM Acquisitions. Both refer to accounts that are over 5 years old. I realize that this is within the reporting time for the debts. My issue is that I paid both of these debts off years ago. I recently pulled my credit reports (the annual, free reports that we're all entitled to) and realized that this company had re-aged my debt with a new date of April, 2011. What could have happened to change the dates on these debts? I disputed the debts with all three credit agencies. These letters are not just bills from this company, but are notices that they've validated the debts. How can they validate debts that #1 have been re-aged, and #2 have been paid off?
Do I ignore these letters? Do I send certified letters to both RJM and all three credit agencies, as I've seen recommended here and on other sites? I've been down this road before, and have sent the letters. My larger complaint here is: how and why can this company suddenly re-add these items to my credit report and start sending me correspondence again?? :wallbang:
Re: Improper Re-Aging of a Disputed Debt
Exactly what do you mean by their having re-aged your debt? They have reported new activity on the debt, or they have merely reported that they are now the collection agency pursuing the debt? If the former, exactly what have they reported?
Collection agencies validate debts in response to requests by you that they do so, by contacting the original creditor for validation. Did you request that the debts be validated? If so, that would explain why they validated the debts.
If there is inaccurate information on your credit reports, or if a debt has been improperly re-aged, dispute the information with the CRAs.
