Caught Stealing at WalMart, Age 18
I got caught stealing at walmart. I am 18 years old and I stole an item that was $10-15 (i can't remember). I was called to the back room, and he took my driver license and wrote down my info. I did not sign anything nor did the police come. He said a letter will come in 4-6 weeks from walmart. He mentioned if you steal something under $25, probably nothing will happen and it's just a warning. I'm still kinda scared about this. What will happen to me? Will I get fined? How much? Thank you for your time.

Did you read the sticky at the top of the forum?

Yes I have. Sorry for being ignorant about that, but I have been doing research online and I'm getting mixed responses.

That's because no one can predict the future.
You will receive a civil demand for several hundred dollars.
Walmart has a year to decide to pursue criminal charges.

If they file criminal charges, yes.
Re: Caught Stealing at WalMart, Age 18
If they send me a Civil demand, I pay it, then nothing can go on my record right since I paid it? paying is not a problem. I just don't want anything on my record. I thank you for all the help.
Re: Caught Stealing at WalMart, Age 18
If Wal-Mart participates, you may have been entered into one of the retail theft databases since you're an adult. That may make getting a job a bit of a pain in fields where you have to handle money, merchandise or sensitive information.
Re: Caught Stealing at WalMart, Age 18
A civil demand has nothing to do with criminal charges, so paying a civil demand won't either stop you from being charged or prosecuted if Walmart chooses to report the incident to the police.

Most places do not pursue charges on low dollar amounts, especially if they did not involve the police. What state are you in?
