Mortgage Fraud Charges

My question involves criminal law for the state of: South Carolina

There has been an ongoing investigation concerning mortgage fraud and a reputable attorney was retained during the pre investigative stage. A propher was signed, however attorney recently wants more money, but really hasn't done much with the pre-indictment phase. Attorney actually used to be an ausa attorney himself. Recently received phone call and attorney needs me to come in as he said indictment is imminent. I know they want more money. How much more effective can this attorney be rather than a federal public defender since there are sentencing guidelines involved. I just don't want to put my family in a jam if and when I have to go away. Was there alot that the attorney could have done pre indictment phase to minimize damage. Any answers are greatly appreciated.

If you believe your attorney is costing you too much money you are free to try to find less expensive alternate counsel. That won't free you from your obligation to pay your lawyer for any fees already earned.
