Can You Get Emancipated from Your Dad and then Live with Your Mom but Pay Her Rent
My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Michigan
Hi Everyone,
Im 14 (15 in May) and I know I have to wait to get emancipated at 16 but my question is: If i had a job, could I get emancipated and move back in with my mom but pay her rent? would the judge allow this?
I lived with my mom until recently my dad got custody - I dont know how. I think maybe because he has more money. But he emotionally and mentally abuses my sister and me all the time. Always bashing my mom and telling us lies about her. i cant stand it here. my brothers are becoming just like him - degrading women and thinking they are better than us. I would greatly appreciate an answer to my question. Thank you.

Nope.
Emancipation means living 100% on your own and supporting yourself 100%.

And really - Dad didn't get custody because he had more money.

What about me paying her rent and buying my own food and clothes?

Where will you be getting that sort of money?

Ill figure it out. alot of other teenagers have right?

Uh...no.
You see, you'll need to able to prove that you ALREADY are capable of supporting yourself completely. That means being able to pay full market rent, utilities, food, clothing, health insurance, transportation, incidentals...all while maintaining good grades in school.
"I'll figure it out" isn't going to wash. At all.

And "lots of teenagers" do not do it. Emancipation is rare, rare, very rare. Less than one percent of teenagers who apply for emancipation are approved for it.

Emancipation isn't some process that lets you move out from under your parental slavery.
It's a process for recognizing that a minor is already independent and should be allowed to enter into contracts and similar things that would be denied to them.
If you're actually being abused, you make a call to the state officials responsible for child welfare (I'm not going to look them up but suggest you start with 1 800 4-a-child).
