How to Change Name on NYC Birth Certificate
My question involves name change laws in the State of: NY
The name on my birth certificate is not the name I have used for all my legal documents (passport, licenses, SS #, etc).
I have never used my birth certificate name my entire life. My parents never called me by that name.
I am now in the process of applying for dual citizenship and I'm having a hard time getting a copy of my birth certificate because all of my identifying papers have a different name.
Is it possible to change the name on my birth certificate? How?
Thanks

Re: How to Change Name on NYC Birth Certificate
Thanks for the information.
The problem I have is I don't have a copy of my original birth certificate, and I can't get one because all my documents of proof of identity shows a different name. The name I have always used differs from the name on my BC.
In short, I can't prove I am the person named on the BC.
How should I proceed?
Thanks
Re: How to Change Name on NYC Birth Certificate
If you are the person identified on your birth certificate, there must be some evidence that you are the person identified on your birth certificate.
What you seem to be asking us to do at this point is to explain how a random person on the street can convince a government agency that they are the person identified on a birth certificate, whether or not it's theirs. Obviously the government has put a lot of obstacles in the way of people who might want to do that in order to prevent identity theft. We have no information about your situation other than what you've provided.
If you truly cannot figure out any way to connect your personal identity with your birth certificate, and that doesn't seem plausible, I suggest retaining a lawyer to help you connect the dots.

Yes, it seems I may need to retain a lawyer. The first name on the BC is different than what I have always used. My last name remains the same. I thought it was terrific when the passport application agent let me use my common name instead of my BC name on my passport years ago! That is, until I misplaced my BC!
Thanks again for the information.
