Accused of Shoplifting in California
My question involves criminal law for the state of: California
I went to a Safeway that is just a few minutes away walking from my college to buy some deodorant and some food. I go straight to the aisle where the deodorant is and see that there is a sale. I grab three packs of deodorant, the packs are bulky enough that i have to use both hands to carry them. I then go to the entrance/exit of the store were the shopping baskets are and drop the deodorants in, then i pick the basket.
As I'm picking up the basket this big white guy is running towards the exit, i didn't think it was towards me at the time, and runs into some toys and makes a mess. I go back to shopping and i take one more look at the guy and he is picking up his mess.
I go and pick up some l paper plates and napkins before going to look for some food. Last time i went I found some nice cooked ribs for $10, but after a glancing at the selection i see that they don't have any this week.
I go to the 15 items or less line and start to place my items on the conveyor belt. I then reach for my wallet and remember that i didn't bring it to school. So i pick everything back up and put it in the basket. The cashier then asked me if i forgot something and i say yeah.
I put everything back its place. I then walk out the door. I started to walk towards my dorm. I . As I'm crossing the street the same white guy calls out to me and shows me a badge. SO i stop in the middle of the crosswalk, while he catches up to me. He ran in front a van that almost hits him as he crossed the street.
The white guy and this other dude start asking me where i put all the items that were in the basket and if they could search me. I told them that i put them all back and that they could search me and that I wanted to see his badge again. He didn't show me his badge and said that the manager was the one that sent them. They asked me again if i put all the items back. I respond with a yes and tell them to search me if they want to, i didn't care because i knew that i didn't do anything wrong. they start walking away before i even finish.
I don't think any laws were broken or anything, but I'm not sure if i should call Safeway's customer service or just not bother ever going back to Safeway? And is this proper procedure for shoplifting? I would assume that they would have called the cops since they ran across the street form me, but they didn't even try to search me.
Re: Accused of Shoplifting in California
Let me understand this. You did stuff that even you, yourself seem to think would be suspect. The store security asks you a few questions and then pursue you no further, and you want WHAT to happen?
Re: Accused of Shoplifting in California
Contacting you in the street may not be proper procedure, but what would you hope to accomplish by contacting Safeway customer service? Perhaps you can say that the store's staff is being attentive to the problem of shoplifting. What else do you want to do?
