Caught Shoplifting at Wal Mart in California
My question involves criminal law for the state of: California

Caught shoplifting at Wal Mart in California..help please.?
So i was caught a couple weeks ago.
When should i be getting the letter in the mail?
It was only one thing..and it was make up.
Not sure of the price, but probably $6-$10.
The guy that brought me to the room and stuff said that it would be a warning.
Then the guy that was writing me up said i would be getting something in the mail, a fine of $50-$500.
And i did have to sign a piece of paper
Around how much will i be paying?
Will i have to go to court?
I have never gotten in trouble with the law or anything and im 18.
He also said the cost could depend on a few things, including if the merchandise was damaged or something.
And i didnt mess with it at all, so it definitely looked like it was new, perfect condition.
Also, the cops were not involved at all..if that makes a difference.
Ohhh, and how will this affect me getting a job??

And yes i know stealing is wrong and i could i have avoided this and all that stuff.
So dont be mean and rude and whatever, because i already know it was stupid of me.

You're talking about a civil demand notice? If they have your correct address, you'll most likely receive a letter in the mail one to three business days from when they mail it to you. Beyond that, only they know if and when they will mail something to you. You'll be paying "a fine of $50-$500" depending upon their assessment of whether the items you were stealing can be resold.

There are companies that maintain records of known shoplifters. If Walmart shares your incident with such a company, even if no charges are filed, you'll have difficulty finding a job with a company (we're really talking retailers) that uses the database.

We have no way of knowing whether you'll be criminally charged. It's less likely if the police weren't summoned, but it's possible even then. If they told you that you wouldn't be charged, odds are you won't be.
