Felony Shoplifting Charges

My question involves criminal law for the state of: Ca

I was called by police for stealing a fragrance at a store in my town and a fragrance in another on the same day ..the items are in new condition no one was hurt..i just walked out. i was called in and i returned them to the police, From both stores the total is less than $300 he said the charge could be a felony in CA cause it was in 2 cities i didn't get arrested and he told me i would be contacted by the D.A.'s office later.. I'm 21 and really ashamed of what i did..this is my first offense and do not want a felony charge..i need advice please on what to do.. and what to expect..i thank you so much for answering!!

You will get charged in criminal & civil court (maybe). You will get information from the DA if they wish to pursue ... its a sit & wait period. You should find an attny in case you need one.

i contacted a criminal defense lawyer yesterday and have a consultation to speak with him tomorrow. I now realize i must have criminalized myself by returning the fragrances to the police..they are very persuading when they say i can be arrested etc. I still am waiting to hear from the DA office about the incident..What should i be prepared for to help me in this case..please ask if you need further information if i was too vague
