Minor Arrested For Shoplifting at Walmart
My question involves criminal law for the state of: North Carolina.
First of all: I'm a minor, 17 years old, no criminal history except for this AT ALL. So, yesterday, while in Walmart with my friend, we both shoplifted some makeup and cosmetic items- a lady stopped me on my way out and took me into the office and asked me to take out the items I had not payed for. I was very cooperative and polite, and took everything out. Everything I had was valued at $45 and some change.. they asked my friend to take out her items and she said she didn't have anything, so they didn't even pursue her anymore. The items I stole were not damaged in any way, however I did go to the bathroom and take off the tags. The police were called and I was taken by them to the magistrates office and I stayed in the county jail in a holding cell for about 5 hours until my parents came and got me out ($500 bond)...they gave me a court date and I have to show up on Feb 22. I was charged with: "I: MISDEMEANOR LARCENY" and "II: POSS STOLEN GOODS/PROPERTY (M)" I have no idea what any of this means...Like I said, this is my first offense, i've never been in any kind of trouble with the law or anyone else for that matter. What's in store for me? Will I be on probation or put in jail or anything like that? Approximately how much would you think my fine would be? Will it be on my record forever? What should I do to get this taken care of? Any reply would be great because I am really clueless as to what's going to happen to me..thank you!
Re: Minor Arrested For Shoplifting at Walmart
You need to talk to your parents about a Criminal Defense Lawyer.
Lucky for you, at 17, you will not be entered into the National Retail Theft Database.
Your parents can expect a bill in the mail....this is a Civil Demand Notice...expect $250+
Your parents can expect that your court costs and fines will be atleast $300.
If you need a public defender...that will be another $200+. Or $1000+ for a lawyer.
If you get Community Service, Pre-Trial Intervention or other program...there are costs for those too. (Yes, you have to pay to get Community Service!)
$45 and change.....costs your parents a few thousand dollars....
Oh...and until your record is clear, you won't be working retail, or even as a cashier at McD's....
