Canada Trip for a Green Card Holder
My wife is from Taiwan, and we would like to go to Canada (Victoria) for a vacation. I was wondering, will she be allowed to do so? If so, what will she need to show?
Also, her Green Card expires on July 13th, and we got her I-751 packet submitted about three weeks ago. This trip is planned for about the time of her expiration. Should we expect a new Green Card prior to that expiration date? If not, going on this trip might be a bad idea, I would think...
Thanks much!
Re: Canada trip for Green Card holder
The USCIS indicates,
Quote:
Quoting International Travel
A Permanent Resident of the United States can travel freely outside of the US. A passport from the country of citizenship is normally all that is needed. To reenter the US a Permanent Resident normally needs to present the green card (Permanent Resident Card, Form I-551) for readmission. A reentry permit is needed for reentry for trips greater than one year but less than two years in duration.
However, I agree with your instinct that you would want to make sure her immigration status is in order before she leaves the country. You may wish to try using the online case status checker.

Thanks for the fast reply Aaron! Good news in that all she'll need will be her Taiwanese passport... and her Green Card for her return though.
I checked that link, but I guess we need an "application receipt number." Is that something we should expect to receive in the mail, and if so, about how long typically after submittal (of the I-751)?
