New York Licensed Driver Pulled Over in New Jersey
I was pulled over in New Jersey and given a ticket for careless driving. I am licensed in New York. The speed isn't indicated on the ticket. How should I proceed? Do the points get transferred? Should I just plead guilty and pay the fine? I really don't know anything about the situation so any help is appreciated. Thanks...

It's my understanding that New York does not add points to your license for traffic violations that occur in other states (but does for the Canadian Provinces of Ontario and Quebec).
Do you have any defenses to the charge? (You haven't even told us what happened, so we're not in a position to advise.)

I figured that my defenses to the charge are irrelevant. I was driving home from a family party on New Year's Eve (it was technically the morning of New Year's Day already, about 3 am), with my whole family in the car. I'm used to driving an SUV, and not my father's smaller car, so I was just kinda feeling it out on the icy roads. When I first got onto the highway, I was cautious of the ice, and was going slow (the speed limit was 65, i was going 40). At some point it hit me that its 3 am and we have to get home, so I decided to put my fears of the ice aside and speed up. I hit 70 pretty quickly, and then slowed back down to 50 because of a sharp turn on the highway. When I slowed down to 50, I was promptly pulled over. The cop asked me why I was changing speeds so rapidly and asked me if I had been drinking (I had not). He gave me a careless driving ticket and said that on the icy roads he could have been more hard on me. I know that it was stupid of me and I guess I forced the cop's hand because of my rapid acceleration, but I still believe that I wasn't driving "carelessly", per se.
I believe the ticket is no more than $75, and again, he didn't indicate my speed on the ticket. I contacted a lawyer and the fees were steep. One of them guaranteed that he could get it changed so it would appear on my driving record as a parking ticket. If the points don't get transferred anyway, is there a point in contesting it? I guess the incentive of a parking ticket as opposed to a moving violation is that there are no points given, but if the points aren't transferred, would it just be a waste of money and time to contest the charge?
