Using a Last Name That's Different From the Name on My Birth Certificate
My question involves name change laws in the State of: VA i am 34 years old.i recently had my drivers license revoked, because i didnt have insurance on a vehicle, which i didnt even have..but instead of pursing that case with dmv i decided just to go ahead an pay the fine an get a new license..well the problem i have is , my grandmother adopted me when i was 3 moths old( i just found this out when i received my birth certificate) well i ve been going by my biological mothers last name,(which i had gotten the original drivers license, an also its on my social security card) my question is ,will the dmv give me my license under my biological mothers name ,which i had originally gotten the drivers license, an my social security card.or am i going to have to go thru another process...one thing id like to know if anything else will they give me a license with my grandmothers last name on the birth certificate until i can get things straightened out...or i am just worrying about nothing/an if not how do i get a name change so i can use my biological mothers last name so i dont have to change so many documents.

If you want to change your name to the one you've used throughout your life, brief instructions and the required form are here - Application for Change of Name (Adult).
If you want to go the other way, you can try to obtain the original name change order and use it to correct your Social Security Card, then use your birth certificate and updated Social Security Card to try to update your other ID. That could be complicated by the fact that you apparently won't initially have any photo ID that uses your legal surname, and many entities are loathe to issue new ID with a name change unless they see a photo ID.
