    Minors Shoplifting in Maryland
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Maryland

I am 16 years old and I was caught shoplifting about 54$ worth of merchandise at Wal-mart. My younger sibling, who is 11 years old came to Wal-mart with me and was also caught shoplifting with about 20$ worth of merchandise. I was taken to a room in the back of the store, and was held there for about an hour. Parents and the police were called, and the policeman wrote down what what stolen, and how it was stolen. Since our parents could not come pick us up, we were allowed to leave. I think I heard the policeman say something about a case number... what is that? I also think something is supposed to come in the mail, but I don't know what to do or expect. Will this go on my criminal record? Will my school be notified? Will any colleges that I will apply to know about this? .... I regret my actions and just want to leave this behind. :(

Talk to your parents about consulting with a criminal defense lawyer. You may qualify for a Diversion program, if your area has one.

If you can't afford a lawyer, go to court, plea "Not Guilty" and ask for a public defender (there will be a fee for this, also).

Case Number means you will be going to court. There will be court costs and fines that your parents will have to pay. Your court date will likely come in the mail.

Another letter will be in the mail - this one will be from WalMart or their lawyers. It's a Civil Demand, and is separate from the criminal charges. The amount varies by state, expect a few hundred dollars.
