Stolen stuff from work, Maryland
I went to work (Thursday night (i work at night), and the police came in and said they wanted to talk to me, and took me to the station.
I have been under severe stress, at home and at work, for example my dad had 2 heart attacks 2 weeks ago, and is dying.
The detective said that everything points to me, and it is possible i was under survalance, and he would have to wait for the information. I stolen what the police say is valued at $16,000. The detective told me if i return the stuff i could go home and not go to jail. So he told me what was taken, and i wrote down on a paper what i took, i signed a warrent, saying they can go in and take the stuff, i went with them, and gave all i had to them.
I signed a paper saying i gave them the stuff i had, and it was documented on the paper what i gave them.
Ok they leave, and in the mean time i am talking with my parents, and siblings.
Then the detective calls me up and he says money was missing, and 4 more items, which i had only taken 2 of those items, they were in the same area, so they said i took them too.
I told him i didnt take the money, and i only took 2 of those items, not 6. He says, just tell me where they are, does a friend have them? Are you afrade to tell? And then he says he dont want to do this, and he threatens me that he will get a warrent out for me and my parents, and we will go to jail, because he is saying they new about it, or helped, but i did it alone.
Is is legal for him to interogate me over the phone?
Next thing i know, my dad has a heart attack, and is rushed to the hostpital.
I have not heard anything since, i was not arressted, and nothing else happend yet, could you please suggest what i should do? This is my first offense. I am scared sh*tless and dont know what to do.
The police was supposed to meet with my boss, and the upper bosses and send the report to the states attorney (i think thats what he said).
If they drop the charges, what would happen to me? What if they dont? What should i do  :(
Re: Stolen stuff from work, Maryland
What exactly was stolen?
Did anyone else have anything to do with it?
Was there a video camera on the money?
Does anyone has access to the money besides you?
Do you have a previous larceny record?
There was nothing wrong with the way the detective talked to you. Some detectives would arrest/detain all of the adult household depending on their descretion. It could of been worse. He could of just arrested you instead. It looks like someone is giving a break, your job or the police. Even though your job does not press charges on you (it seems like that), the State of Maryland still can.
If there is anything else you've taken, I would advise you to give it back before they find out it is missing.
Try calling the detective back to see where everything stands. Don't make any contact with the job unless they call you.
Try getting a different job soon as possible. If you can get a second job part/full time, go for it. It will help you retain an attorney if it comes to that.

What exactly was stolen?
*6 computers is what i took, but they say 4 more are missing, digital camera, router, scanner
Did anyone else have anything to do with it?
*No
Was there a video camera on the money?
*It was in an office, they were supposed to get cameras in the building in the up-coming months.
Does anyone has access to the money besides you?
*Yes, there is other people that has access.
Do you have a previous larceny record?
*No i do not have any record, never been in trouble with the law before.
I didnt take anything else, but they still say the 4 other computers are missing. He told me that he was going to submit the paperwork to the states attorney and he threatened to arrest me and my parents, but has not done so.
Well they took my keys to the building and i cant get in, and i assumed they dont want me to go back to work, and they have not called me so i dont know whats going on with my job, if i have it anymore.
I can get another job, and my parents are willing to help pay for the costs also.
I am kind of afrade now, if i call the detective, what he is going to say, couldnt i get a public defender for to find out about where im standing?
Re: Stolen stuff from work, Maryland
Your age could be a factor; are you a minor or adult? Also, the high value of the items may be responsible for some of the delay in the making of a charging decision.
If you confessed to the police in writing, supposedly disclosing all of the items you stole, then they confront you with additional stolen items and you admit to taking some (but not all) of those additional items, they will be understandably skeptical of your claim not to have taken more.

There is not a public defender unless there will be a court case. If you have someone with a good attitude call for you, the dective might give them more information.
Re: Stolen stuff from work, Maryland
Im 19, i could get my parents to talk to him, i dont have much knowledge of the court system, so maybe they can explane a bit more to me what im going to need to do.
Just wondering is there a chance they will come and arrest me? Or will they give me a court date?
Re: Stolen stuff from work, Maryland
It does not look like there will be an arrest unless the camera saw you steal something else you forgot to mention to them. There are times police drop the charges if the item(s) is/are returned. The store may be willing to drop the charges because everything is returned and they do not want to go thru no court process.
But do sit there and worry. Be prepared by looking for a different job asap.
Re: Stolen stuff from work, Maryland
If the police were involved, the dollar amounts are as large as you describe, and you confessed, I would expect criminal charges to follow.
