Theft by Taking in Georgia

I wanted to hear from some comments about this since this happened yesterday. I am a licensed emt in ga. In 5/91 , I was charged with violation of the ga control act.Under the 1st offender act, no jail,just probation. I got hooked on painkillers and you can all figure the rest. Now comes 2006, and my problem has raised its ugly head but the worst part is that now I am a Paramedic,Public Info Officer for a FireDept.,and Lieutenant. I am not saying my drugs caused this. I sold some items on ebay from my department to buy things needed for my position such as cameras,laptop hard drives and such. Anyways,yes I did it,suchan idiot.My dept. never gave me the funds to buy things so I sold to buy.I know better than stealing., anyways March 31st came and I was called to the police office and questioned,no rights read to me. They showed me a few items off ebay from my account , yes I did it. Well after a little while,I was asked to resign, since i had been there 8+ years ,and no problems and the community knew me.Police say, no charges,we know you are going to counseling, and you admited it and thats it......Well 4/8/06 I started another job as a Paramedic,not far from home. On the 7th of June the dept I was working for called me and ask me what was going on that the GBI was investigating me and another Paramedic for selling items on Ebay. Stunned,I am thinking,this was settled..........I thought. June 14th comes and my wife calls me to come home.she is crying.Tells me they have a charge of THEFT by Taking against me and wanted me to come to the jail.SHOCK.......Well I go, do the process,photo,magistrate judge askdo I understand the charges, and I said NO, not really .But all I was told was this. My wife starts to hear rumors that this other guy that was in trouble accused me in helping him steal helmets and such items.....I know the medics name,and thats about it.......They tell my wife they would show her the stuff if she came down to the jail...she didn't....still I have no idea what changed from March to yesterday. So now the state i am in now is that,...My new job is on hold,they didn't fire me,just wanted everyting cleared up.NO INCOME. I have charges against me with no lawyer,WE MAKE TOO MUCH MONEY FOR PUBLIC DEFENDER. How is that with half our income gone. Grand jury goes in in Sept. 27. The question is how do I get a lawyer to defend me with no money. We are maxed. I can't draw unemployment because I haven't been fired,just taken off the schedule. I have no idea where to start.I still see a counselor for my problem and go to some meetings. Still what are some avenues you would suggest I do. Just want to hear some. Thank you

You need a lawyer.

Would you qualify for a public defender if your wife files for divorce? (Divorce lawsuits can be dismissed. Just a thought.)

I got a lawyer,grand jury meets in Sept. 27, My lawyer was hoping to get this settled out of court,fine,probation so I am just waiting to see what he can do.
