Can you Go to College With an Expired Visa
    Hi!
I was just wondering if I can go to college if my visa expired and also if there is anyway I could receive a student loan. I also have a SSN.
    Thanks.

What sort of visa. What does your I-94 say? Where did you get this SSN? What are you doing in an attempt to fix your status?

Generally, the answer is NO to your first question. You are not eligible for federal-backed student loans without being at least a permanent resident. You might get a private loan, but those are often not overly desirable (and it's up to the lender if he is really stupid enough to loan money to an illegal alien).

A J-1 visa. My I-94 expired in Oct 31st this year. I had a work permit that also expired (on Oct 1st) and that's how I got my SSN.
I know I can't get a federal loan, and that's ok. I just want to know if I can go to college if I have a SSN.

Re: Can you Go to College With an Expired Visa
With an expired I-94, you are illegally present. You could be detained and deported. Illegal presence of over 180 days triggers a ban from entry into the US. Since you are now an illegal overstay, you cannot adjust status to study. So, no, at this time you may not attend school legally.

You need to leave the US immediately if you intend to return any time soon to study. You will need to apply for an F-1 visa after gaining admission, proving finances, and getting an I-20. The longer you overstay, the harder it will be to convince the visa officer that you qualify.
