    Current F-1 Visa, Marrying a Citizen -- a Couple
    Hi --

I am currently a F-1 visa holder in good status. I just got engaged! My fiance and I would like to get married soon so that I can leave the country next summer (2011) to visit my home country for the birth of my brother's child, but still re-enter the U.S. with no problems. So, my questions are:

    1. How long does it take after getting married to change from an F-1 visa to whatever type of visa a "wife" now has?

    2. Will I have a visa, or will I be a "legal immigrant", or what will I be called?

    3. What steps do we have to take in terms of filing paperwork for our marriage with immigration?

    4. Do I need a lawyer? I'm not out of status, so I didn't think so.

Thank you SO much in advance!

You haven't shared any facts about your fiancé's immigration status or the visa he holds. We are thus in no position to speak to you situation. If you consult an immigration lawyer and share the relevant facts, you may be able to get answers.
