Minor Moving in with Boyfriend
My question involves emancipation laws for the State of: Md.
Hi,
I was wondering if it is ok for me to move in with my boyfriend who is 18. I am 17 years old. We currently live together with my parents but have just bought a house, and I want to make sure it is legal that I can live there. We have a 1 and a half year old son, and I think that helps with me being allowed to move there? We are also engaged, if that helps. The thing that I am mostly worried about is college, because they check to see if your address is with your parents, but I also wanted to chenage my lisence to our new houses address.
So my questions are:
Am i legally allowed to live there?
If I can live there, do I have to be emancipated, or can i still legally have my parents as my guardians?
Do you think that my new college will check to see if my parents live there?
And any other help would be nice.
Re: Minor Moving in with Boyfriend
1.) If your parents give you permission, yes. If your parents do not give you permission, no.
2.) If your parents give you permission, you do not need to be emancipated. If your parents do not give you permission, you will not be living there at all. Besides, from what you have posted you do not qualify for emancipation, so I wouldn't expect that to be an issue.
3.) We have no way of knowing what your college will do. But if their rule is that you must be living with your parents, I wouldn't count on their not checking.
I'm not an expert on college financial aid, but before you make this move (even with your parents' permission), I'd confirm that it does not make you ineligible, particularly since you seem to be so concerned about remaining as a dependent of your parents while still living on your own.
