Arrested for Underage Possession in Virginia
My question involves criminal law for the state of: Virginia (In the town of Alexandria)
Last night me and a few other friends were hanging out at a friends house, taking a few shots and watching TV. While we're watching TV, after we've done most of our drinking the police knock on the back door (they went into my friends backyard on a suspicion of "burglars" or something like that) and enter the door. They ask whether a car parked in my friends driveway belongs to anyone in the house, and then asks whether we had been drinking. We all had, and we complied. We all were charged with Underage Possession of Alcohol and given court summons.
From browsing this forum it looks like I'm facing mandatory fines of at least 500, 50+ hours of community service and a suspended license for atleast 6 months. What I was wondering is if there is any realistic chance these charges would be dropped or lessened (such as not losing my license, especially considering none of us intended to drive/were driving), and should I get a lawyer?
Thank you (and I know alcohol is ruining my life, its a slippery slope and all that so you can put away the soapbox)
Re: Arrested for Underage Possession in Virginia
Essentially I am asking if I am guarenteed to lose my license, have atleast a 500 dollar fine and be on probation for 6 months essentially because the police were wandering through my friends backyard and peeked in the window and opened the door.
None of us were driving, incoherent or even very intoxicated. Would the police still attempt to get the biggest fine they can out of me? I understand that the police are essentially only here anymore to bring money in for the government, but it is incredibly unfair and corrupt.
