    Does Connecticut Allow Open Adoption
My question involves adoption law for the State of: Connecticut

This inquiry involves two families, each residing in different states. The mother is the primary parent of which the child lives with and has lived with since the birth (the child is now 7 years old). The father pays child support monthly and has done so for the child's entire life. Mother and father were never married but are now married to other people. Is it possible for the birth father to sign his rights away in an open adoption but still have a brief visit once a year (for example one week)? What if the mother moves to another state? Would the open adoption agreement still be in affect or would another court date have to be set to reapply the new states laws? As of right now there is a set and agreed upon schedule for child visitation and child support. With open adoption being a somewhat recent development it seems there is little out there to research, much less on what is actual law. Please help!

    Thanks in advance.

Re: Does Connecticut Allow Open Adoption
Open adoption isn't about maintaining court-ordered visitation. It's about allowing the biological mother (possibly also the father) to know who the adoptive parents are.

If dad wants to be sure that he will maintain visitation rights, or his ability to coordinate contact if the child moves to another state, dad should maintain his parental rights. That said, the law does not forbid agreement about visitation rights between genetic and adoptive parents subject to consideration of best interest of the child.
